Liked this puzzle a lot, but I can't parse two.

12a Genuine peers in ceremonial clothes (7)

Answer looks like 'sincere' but I can only see the definition.

22d Surpass former partner with part in animated film (5)
E?C?L
I'm guessing 'excel', ex = former partner, but how is the 'cel' parsed?

12a is hidden in the clue.

22d Chambers gives cel as an abbreviation for Celluloid, so a part of film (not sure about ‘animated’).

Jono, “cel” as short for celluloid means the celluloid sheet on which an image is drawn as part of an animation. Multiple cels are combined to create the animated film.
