Are there only three cells to move around? It seems a little unsafisfactory...

Forming new words, even only half a dozen of them, is always satifying.

True, malone, but why go to the trouble of inventing 9 shares if only 3 are treated? Also can anyone see anything magical or square? I can't

DSC, I;d never heard of or seen a Magic Square until today - and the puzzle seems to match up with that....and also with the definition in Chambers (which I've just thought to check!)

Great fun and some challenging clues. There seemed to be only one option for the top left entry in the final magic square clue which made completing the endgame unambiguous. Thank you Kcit.

I hope you can help me.
I am stuck with2 Magic Square clues

7 Poet's wanted to injure male celebrity soldier with a column

I have MA?I?? for one answer and ?N?A for the other.....no ideas here

8 Bird watcher's expression almost looks to capture rook in part of church
I have S?ARE for the first part and SPIRE for the second.
STARE?

I think I can see how the end game might work.....moving just 3 letters and figures....thanks for the push to look up Chambers..
Thank you

fred

Hi fred, 7: m + a-list, ant + a. 8: stare (dbl def), r in spie(s)

Yes for 8. Spie(s), almost look, with R, rook inside. I think Stare is just a double definition.

7 'Poet's wanted...' was a new word for me. The usual Male, then an everyday word (normally hyphened) for celebrity, someone who's famous.
7. Soldier... the usual three-letter soldier followed by ('with') a word in the clue...leads to a column.
