I believe I have the answer to 9, and get the general thrust of the clue. But I don’t understand how the last four words work, particularly with respect to the extra letter.

Bit of a toss-up for the two letters, isn't it?

AL covers (hides) the M of CWM to give a letter string of CWAL which includes an extra letter
