Surprised not to find a thread for Jumbo 1799 as it has some obscure words but I can’t parse 44a
Soldier essentially gains woman’s love, unsettling protagonist (8)

I have the answer and can see the last 4 letters as “woman’s love” but just can’t see the “soldier essentially” bit! It’s probably staring me in the face!

Miles, the soldier (3) has 6 legs, + the middle letter of 'gains' and you have the rest.

I was trying to make the first four letters the “essence” of soldier and just didn’t think about the “essence” of gains!
