I have a full grid, but can locate only 14 of the special clues. I suspect that the 15th is 6 or 26, but I can't see why. From the 14 extra bits I have a chap, a profession, a forename and 5 bits of gobbledygook, so something's wrong somewhere. A pity, since the clueing is otherwise pleasing. I need a shove.

Cockie, there's a chap, a profession and a SURname... That's the Acrosses, I'll need to revisit the Downs.

Like the Across clues, there's a little clump of Down ones that go together.

I too have the chap, the profession and surname (9 across clues) and also 14-20 (4 down clues) but that only gives me 13 clues so what are the other two?
By googling I have found a series of books but can't see any names in the grid.
Any help gratefully received!

Bobbibunny, the entry from the Down clues should show what you need, and HOW you'd highlight (the names aren't as obvious as is often the case, but they are there).

I didn't wait for all the sets of characters, I was able to get the theme from the Across ones that I had.

Thanks Malone, that was well worth persevering!
I started highlighting the names without much confidence - very clever

Bobbibunny, glad you managed - and glad I could help, if I did! I am not a purist, I seldom do more work than is necessary - other solvers are more fastidious....

A very enjoyable EV. I don’t recall seeing The Moonlighters before; if this was a debut it was a most accomplished one.

Very neat - well worth the head-scratching. Always nice in advanced antiquity to learn something new.
