Thanks Phil10000! Those clues are perfect. I especially like 24a. Sorry Malone! The clues were "cut into pieces: eight or 27, perhaps". And "overheard one inspiring announcements from Persians". Both 4 letters.

I hadn't heard of the word used for dung in 18D, or understand the meaning of empty in 19D. Apart from cats and rugs, can't think of anything else Persian for 26A.

Helen - your first thought about Persians is the correct one!

Markeo, thanks for your reply and for giving the clues. I don't often see the Observer or Guardian puzzles, but I DO like the chance to tackle some of the clues. Both of yours were gettable, even without being given any letters!

I've done the first which is a pain -- colouring in the black spaces without any errors...
Buying the paper might be difficult in my Canadian city, would require some research. But my BFF will print it for me so again thanks to Jono.
Keep cool.

Thanks, Ethereal - and I agree, buying the paper would be rather a big task! I used to have to draw grids when we were on holiday - I got used to using things like 'whale watching' and jeep safari' leaflets as makeshift rulers!
Glad to hear you'll get a print-out.

PS Sorry for the diversion, folks.

Thanks, Phil. Obviously my Sunday lunch fed my grey cells and I've twigged 18D and 19D too, so all good.
