I played the puzzle. Interesting concept. No reason why the clues could not be cryptic. I notice there’s a ‘hard mode’ , I’ll try that tomorrow.

I gave Hard Mode on #16 a go myself this morning. A couple of curly ones. 16D I'd not heard of before, so you learn something every day!
