Hi everyone. Please can anyone help with these? In all cases I have an answer but don't fully understand the parsing.

17a: Country vet initially cutting side, in part going backwards (2,8)
EL SALVADOR?

39a: Too hot brandy, perhaps what returned pub to profit (4,3,7)
INTO THE BARGAIN?

49a: Choose to garner support, hiding age in case anyone might see (4,5)
OPEN COURT?

TIA

17a: outside 4 is a reversal of "part". Inside that is 1 ("vet initially") inside 5 ("side).

Didn't like this one at all - a bit of a stinker but finally finished it, however...
Can someone parse this for me please?

39a is a strong contender for my worst clue of the year. Just my own list. Others may find it wonderful.
