Hi Lumen
Definition is the first two words and is quite obscure. Chambers entry is hyphenated 3-6. The wordplay is an anagram of barely around a three letter noun that can be preceded by soldier.

Lumen, the soldier is in the middle of the answer. There’s really only one way to arrange “barely” around it. It’s in Chambers under the first three letters.

Thanks I have it now.
I must say that was a very obscure theme - even although I am personally aware of it!
