5a Dejection sadly about island in Middle East (7)

I’ve no idea what kind of clue it is. I have no idea what the definition is!

This clue is out of place in a Quiptic. The definition is "dejection" (but not a usual word). "Sadly" gives 4 letters, island gives 1, and "Middle East" gives the outer letters - some question about whether this is valid.

OK, to spell it out, it's ALA(I)S inside ME. Not a great clue, and not suitable for the Quiptic either.
