DETHRONED? I understand the definition, but how does it parse?

18a: Workers together run in short jacket (5)
I have TUNIC. "Workers together" could be TUC, but how does the NI fit in?

R king
ONE
D departs

2d. looks like DE(A)TH, ruin without A + R, king, + ONE + D for departs.
18a. TU, trade union, (workers together) + NIC(k), run in short.

Thank you. DEATH for RUIN is a new one on me. No wonder I struggled (not to mention the deletions...)

Any additional clues very much welcomed! I’m not even sure what I’m solving for …..

What answer do you have for 18d (which gives you the initial S)?

And what do you have for 5d (which gives you the D)? In both cases I have different letters in those spaces.

I think the s is wrong in 28a. As is tootsie. I have it as a metric foot. I can gift both answers if wanted
