Looks like woad but again can’t parse it.

12d WEAR (sport) inside OWES (indebted to) inside NIX (nothing)

How or why is woad making people blue rather than things or fabric? I'm missing something obviously

Bumping to see if replies have come in after Malone’s. Ash is going to look at the problems next week.

Regarding the posting for woad, from what I remember it was a blue dye applied to the body in battles in olden days, with a view to scare the enemy. The clue alludes to "without a lot of fuss" which parses as:- W/O (without) + AD (most of ADO).

Ah ok thanks for that. It was the inclusion of the word people that had me. no mention of the battle scenario in chambers...
