Mustard33, if I remember correctly,it's just a variation in spelling. The entry is simply an anagram ('wandering) of the first couple of words and a usual abbreviation (of the next).

I've finished now but for some time was stuck on the last clue 6D 'forty bundles of hay ...'. I asked AI and when I gave it the letters I had, it gave me the answer straight up, and explained it all too. Obscure as it was! But the reason I write is that I wonder about the future of crosswording, if that's all it takes.

I understand your concern about the ready availability of such words through AI and the like. To me, the art of crossword compiling is not about using obscure words, but more about subtle wordplays, misleading surface reads, touches of wry humour, etc. I used to get really annoyed with Azed for his excessive use of Scottish dialect words, even though I have a native Scot to consult. My own list of all time favourite clues contains only very familiar words.

Buzzy, I like to think my scottish heritage would stand me in good stead, but am usually baffled by these clues. Ditto anything that says Spenser!
So agree with your other thoughts too.
