Please can anyone help with these? In both cases I understand the definition but not how they parse.

35a: What is thematic in mathematical part of song? (6,5)
MIDDLE EIGHT?

35a. THEMATIC makes the middle letters of MA(THEMATIC)AL

19a. is a word for 'probe' (5) (usually followed by 'the depths'), minus the first letter + a synonym for 'back'
