As ever, thanks to Jono and the non-rotating device access.

I’ve completed all the clues but I’d welcome a nudge towards the completion of 1a and 34. My midpoint starting letters don’t amount to anything legible so I suspect that some must be wrong. Most of the day taken up with trying to create a barrier to ground elder so I have probably not been at my most acute!

Found this one of the toughest to date. 6 hours total, not helped by watching a rerun of Dune at the same time. Agree with the word counts given above, but none of the words in either the message or the two across entries are particularly obscure.

Thank you , Muraria. All clear now - what a dimwit I am! The invader is coming from an untended neighbouring garden (neighbour concerned is 104 so cannot be expected to do much tending!). I’m told that a barrier 50cm deep will help in holding back the tide, so I’ve been “planting” 50cm deep lengths of hardboard along the line of the boundary fence. I suspect that I will be calling it “the Canute Line” ere long!

Hi William,

1d is the second half of the clue. The tyrant is female.

2d Also second part of the clue. Twist is a Dickensian dbe.

12a A word for rams (of the sheep kind) reversed then one letter ‘uncovered vans’.
