It took an embarrassingly long time for the penny to drop; even with the message completed, I had to consult Google to interpret it. Once grasped, the final stages fell into place and I was able to admire the cleverness of the construction and the sheer quantity of moving parts in the mechanics. Than you, Miles.

A hint for 2d 'Steel constituent casing diffused particle accelerator (7)' would be helpul, if possible.

The “steel constituent” is “iron” around a four letter synonym for “soft” (think lighting) which loses a letter. The definition is “particle accelerator” - not on the CERN scale!

Idiot that I am. I meant to put “diffused” but gave the synonym in clear. Apologies!

Thank you for the hint, I kept thinking CERN although somehow knew it had no place.
