And sorry, Nitters, I have just noticed you asked for a hint (which I think would have been pretty tricky with such a short answer and half the letters in already)!

Nitters, thanks, and glad we could help - Mattrom was swifter on the draw! I quite like the misdirection involved in crossword clues, it's easy at times to get caught out.

Bridgeofsize, it's always good to give the clues - those without a copy can be interested, can help.

18 A. Depressed, wife's left - needs an advance (4) Loan
It's Low, depressed, with the W, wife going (wife's left) and add An (needs an). Lo an. Loan/advance.

Bridgeofsize, thanks - and glad I could help. I am fine - clueless - with Private Eye as I get the magazine, but I find it infuriating when Guardian or Observer clues are mentioned here, but the details aren't given!

I will be grateful for comments on Private Eye 830 26 across
“Husband roped into breaks in London feature”
I have __H__M__S and the solution looks as though it ought to be the name of the river but I cannot see how that works. Am I looking at the wrong solution?

No, Michaelp, that's right - well, it's what I put! The feature, without the H, means the same as breaks, trains, think of animals, horses. The husband is put inside (roped) that.

Of course, thanks. I was trying to find a synonym for holidays or snaps in half as the case for the H.
