2 D Paints, describes (I'll paint a picture for you, here's Big Al...) It could be Pains, efforts, ie once you remove the T, taking time.

Do all clues have definitions, or is there something special, different about this puzzle?

For 19 D,. I keep seeing Mullet, but it makes no sense! Mull = add spice to (wine) and Et is 'eat outside', the outside letters of the word.

19d… are you sure that is the full clue?

I believe the original is…
Add spice to eat outside - such a shock (6)

In which case the “shock” is on your head (well hopefully not!)

We can take this opportunity remind ourselves of the Chambers definition…

mullet3 /mulˈit/
noun
A hairstyle that is short at the front, long at the back, and ridiculous all round

Hah, Jono - I would thank you, but I got really quite fed up of of the 'fun' definitions - mainly because they crop up every so often. Didn't we have a fairly recent themed crossword involving some of them (including mullet, there's always mullet)?

I recall that was a Doc puzzle in the Spectator.

Jono, thanks, I didn't spend long thinking about it - in case too many of the words came back to me! That's a little unfair, it's probably only 'mullet' that causes me to sigh and wince and shrug...
