Amongst many others I am stumped by…

18a They hope to conquer extremely attritional places for example (12)

I have tried bunging in AL for extremes of attritional to no avail.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's a strange (poor?) clue. Try adding the extremes of "places" to your AL!
