Get 3 letters from Suriname, then insert another 3 letter word with the penultimate word giving the clue to give you a lovely place.

Yes birder - I was trying to use Trump as alternate-letter fodder - no wonder I couldn't make it work.

25: 'host' = def. Drop a letter from a crazy word.
27: 3,3,2.

Finished without the forum, but with a few uses of CrosswordSolver. Was baffled by parsing of 26a until Chrise's help in @25, thanks. I was trying to work "kin" into it.
FOI: 17a
LOI: 26 because I couldn't parse it: previous was 21d but using the crosser from 26
COD: 14/1 for ingenious long anagram; 13d rather fun.

For a long time only had one answer, 17a, then eventually twigged 15a and went on from there.
