I'm perplexed by this. The message from the unclued entries implies a method of entering the others which does not lead to real words. I think I know what I'm looking for in forming these chimeras, but that's where I'm stuck. Soldier on!
@Cockie: The paired unclued lights are real words (with the exception of 26A, which I think must be an abbreviation), which lead in turn to other real words. I am mystified about the single unclued light which must be highlighted.
There is an anagram of something fairly recently found to have been nasty, but it’s an agent, rather than an outcome. Toss-up between that and its symmetrical - also relevant - entry. GWIT time, I fear.

My thinking was that for it to be a fully thematic example it had to be an anagram so I went with the first of your possibilities.
The other one is a substance that causes a reaction not the reaction itself.
