Good afternoon,

Can I ask for a helpful nudge for 1a please?

“Boutique hotel in Provence?” (5)

Through guess and check, I have ***H*

Does that mean Provence should be a 4 letter word containing the ‘H’?

The four letter place, city, in Provence, doesn't have the H in it initially - it's added, to make a synonym for 'boutique' (not a shop, another word for 'small and stylish, not a big chain...).
