Help please if anyone is out there! 12a: in Durban, bits of bramble from sides of ruin blocking entrances {6} there will be one letter not required for the answer, but I have ?IORN? Which must be wrong perhaps?

Completed the grid and changed the two answers, Problem is, I don't understand what the extra letters from the across clues are supposed to be telling me - which worries me. I also can't parse 20a, unless "S" means steed.

Gitto, the S is part of 'is turning', there's a four-letter 'loch' with the usual 'island' inside. (The not required letter comes from the loch).

Gitto, I forgot to say, I think it wasn't essential to get the information from the extra extra letters . The theme seemed gettable anyway.

I agree Malone, it just seemed an unnecessary complication. The two names and the preamble provide all the information you need. BTW it is 30a that I can't parse, 20a was a typo.
