Yes the word you are thinking of is correct, and Chambers gives it as the second meaning of fhe first two words. "Nibbled" is an indication that a synonym of the third word has been shortened.
Thank you. I had checked that word in Chambers but, as usual, completely missed the pertinent part. I’ve found it now, cheers for the guidance. I did think this was a more difficult one than usual.
