The Trump Today Show has floundered. Devoid of soda, empathy, truth leaving just pretence. (4)

Was looking for a Truman Show analogue.
Needed to get the “soda” link in.

Lots to like this week; as always I am looking for silky smooth (or at least sensible) surfaces and correct cryptic grammar.

Some honorable mentions that had nice ideas but not quite there:

paul 6; Las Vegas is not considered part of the American SW (and the two would not be synonymous even if it was), although your surface is nice (and likely accurate)
chris 16; like the wordplay a lot, definition a bit iffy
swarb 24; "w "is already Chambers-approved for "women" so "begin to" is not needed
swarb 25; nice acrostic but needs "starts" to spend...
fj 34; An anagram indicator is needed for "mate" but I don't think "perhaps" works; maybe "tired", "wasted", etc.

My lengthy shortlist:

rekal 43; great idea, although I think the clue would have been trickier using a synonym of "shallow"
motley 38; love the topicality and reverse acrostic, although "are" as a linkword rather than "now" would be better
geeker 36; baseball clues always welcome here, especially on Opening Day
raffles 26; works nicely since RE appears in that order in the anagram fodder
jono 23; always a sucker for a letter swap
tyke 18; nice 2,2 charade of a 4 letter word.
geting 11; very nice though Miss Piggy would strongly object to your characterization, I think.
geting 5 got to SH + OW first; I had to Google to see that Twisted is a current UK show, not sure how "G" that "GK" is.
jono 4; best of the many anagrams

Despite my quibble over the linkword, I can't ignore the topicality and clever wordplay in motley 38:

From the outset, warnings over Hormuz Strait setback now manifest (4)

Congrats and condolences motley, and thanks to all for playing.

Well done, motley. That would have been my choice, and after seeing it I mentally threw in the towel.

Thanks to buddy for challenge, hosting and shortlist.
