I wonder if the numbering has gone wrong, or something has been entered in the wrong place? I'm pretty convinced that the "crosser" is DUCHESS.

ChrisE, I've looked out the puzzle - 7 D and 17 A don't come anywhere near each other! The earlier query must have got things confused, I haven't gone back to check the details.
