Second week in a row that I found this quite an odd Everyman. What's with all the two-word clues? And the stylistically similar 8A and 22A? And it took me an age to parse 14A (surely should be 3-4, rather than 3, 4?), mainly due to the clumsy surface. Nevertheless enjoyable, especially the homophones, with one eliciting a particularly large groan.

Agreed, geting @ 10. Contain isn’t intransitive, so the surface is meaningless. “It” on the end would suffice.

On reflection, geting, I think 3d is okay, if you assume it’s just an inversion of the normal order, where the first three words would be at the end, but which would scupper the containment

Thanks Jon.

Took me an age to get 9 - never saw that deletion indicator before.

I still find it very awkwardly phrased then but thanks Quisling

Still can’t quite parse 9d

The “to crawl” suggests clenching should refer to “I” as the letter that is enclosed, but not sure how that comes from “- first”.

If it was “a” instead of “I” that could be from first letter of alphabet, but would mean solution is past tense.

Lupus could the I in 9d refer to first person?

I wonder if anyone submitted their crossword late and had difficulties with (what seems to be) the new format? I print off the PDF on the Sunday, then apply online when I remember to. I found it really hard to navigate, it was impossible to see the keyboard and the top of the crossword at the same time. It was also hard to scroll up and down. I’m not sure if this was made worse by my relatively old iPhone.
