Unlike some, I had little difficulty, and in fact I think it’s the first time I’ve completed a prize crossword without having to look anything up, and I didn’t even spot the theme. Though not spotting the theme did mean that I got 27d wrong: I had another word for ‘help’ and couldn’t parse it, whereas the parsing for the correct answer is obvious.

Is the "symbol for depth" just a single letter? If it is then I think it's far too vague and generic to be a repectable clue. Apart from that I think all the clues are fine, and I don't share the complaints some people have raised about them.

Parses as 4,1,5, definition is last word (not that common, I had to Google it)

3d parses as 4 (something that stops water), 1 (from the clue), 5 (minute, as in a short period of time). Chambers calls it a ‘fabulous monster’!

The derivation of the 5 letter word for a short period of time is rather interesting and nautical and not something I knew.

The entry is a clue to the letter d, representing depth.

Thanks Darla. I get the D, it’s the rest I’m struggling with…..

Is it because, in the traditional cartoon representation, it had just a D written on it? I don't think it's a good clue.
