A really enjoyable puzzle to fill a damp Sunday afternoon. The only bit I could do with a bit of a gentle nudge on is how to fill the middle cell. I can think of two options, either a single letter or possibly shading the cell, am I on right track. I have everything else including the characters.

Any nudge greatly appreciated

I think it’s a single letter to complete the diagonal first word of the three-word phrase, of which the choice of letters is the third

I have to confess complete ignorance of the associated characters and spent some time fruitlessly searching for names in the same sphere as the first person. Enlightened by Google, I completed a very satisfying set of highlights. Thanks to Shark.

As always an elegant puzzle from Shark I managed to mislead myself to begin with by writing something in rough in my working grid and then misreading it later.
