Not too stressful this time, and a quote that I knew without reference to Google. Spectator compilsrs must be getting kinder

I had a similar experience, Prospero. This felt more like Gemelo in places. That said some very nice clues. 6 and 38 were my favourites.

I believe this is only Madrigal’s third puzzle in the Speccie. There were two last year. Though I suspect he/she is an established setter elsewhere.

Took me longer than it should have to sort out such a well-known quote. Not helped by guessing at “darkens” in 35 across! A good puzzle with some good clues.

Ah! 38ac ( he directs one number for girl at end of dance) is killing me, as is the quote; I thought the last 4 letters of 38 ac were TINA but the only thing I can find is EXECUTIVE to make any sense. Any steer towards the quote would be much appreciated!

38 A. He's a very famous director. There's a 10-letter dance, it replaces the girl at the end with 'one' and 'number'...
