Well this was tough indeed. Obscure words, very subtle word plays and misleading definitions. Feared a DNF, but persevered.

Agreed BB. I thought perhaps the hardest Gemelo to date.

That said, had I spotted the full extent of the gimmick earlier, and in particular relevance of one word in the preamble, it would have been a great help.

18d reminded me of the oft quoted clue by Rufus which also starts “Two girls…”

Two girls, one on each knee (7) for the unitiated.

Not my cup of tea - I couldn't really see the point of the conceit, added to the difficulty yes, but did not add to the thrill of solving...

I thought the discovery of the final grid image was an extra something for the solver. Remarkable that 5 and 29 are the only lights not to be intersected.
