A couple of years after Foinavon's win, I got a job in Compton, the village where he was trained. Right in the middle of training country but the bookie was closed. I can only assume that the entire village had a punt and, since he was a total donkey, the bookie didn't bother to lay the bets off. Ooops.

My granny sent me to the bookies with half-a-crown to put on Foinavon's nose - my uncle whispered aside that I should trouser it and say nothing - I went to the bookie, and she elevated her hat pin (method of choosing) to even higher status, and I learned an important life lesson.

At least the horse did someone some good!
