geeker - thanks for 7d. I was trying to make something out of the last three letters, but you have put me out of my misery. Having said that, I’m with Brendan, except that the homophone is so dodgy that I think we can both be excused for not having got it from ‘caught’.

Roger and brendan, I only wrote in 7d after an incorrect (3,3) parsing. Once brendan queried that parsing, I followed the "caught" hint and belatedly saw the extremely dubious homophone. Although the PDM was somewhat humo(u)rous, akin to laughing at a bad pun. 😬

Anyone who is as big a fan as me of the movie Hot Fuzz, will recall the 7d pun to describe a character with a successful home (refrigeration) appliance business.

Hi BOR,

I actually just rewatched that film, it's great, but don't recall the 7d reference.

Irritatingly left staring at 1d with all the crossers in and the only words I can jam in there, don't even begin to make sense.

Obscure hint for 1d: the second word is somewhat Pauline. ;-)

Hi Plutocrat,

1d - one of the long anagrams I referred to but not a term I knew, Chambers does confirm that it "gives a human feel to things"

Well done on “fighting suit”, I missed that. Worthy of a notebook entry for me.

This had the feel of a puzzle that might have been put together a couple of years ago, though the enquiry is still running of course.

In other news, Tramp posted that this week’s Private Eye is based on a puzzle by him which was originally rejected by the Guardian as “unsuitable” (I suppose due to the theme). It’s his grid and clue at 1,4,21 across (which is very good) and I believe other clues by Cyclops.
