Slowly getting there. Got the 18 clashes and resolved the 12 leading to the theme, but still only got 20 misprints and do not know how to resolve the other six thematically - yet.

Finally finished - and very clever it is. My stumbling block was not spotting the 12th misprint.

I identified an additional misprint in 23a - it may have been an intentional elephant trap in which case respect to Tringa.

So did I -would that be an S?

I can see what you mean... but [probably] the only definition available that gives a convincing clue is the one selected.

You wouldn't call a release that didn't chart a mess, a puddle, a plump etc...

I have all the material required for the endgame, but I’m confused about the theme. Is it revealed in 2 lines of the grid? Or just 1?

Thanks kirky. In the time it took for you to reply, penny finally dropped. Had been pursuing a red herring for the theme.

I am a bit uncertain about the 'instruction'. The last word would seem to end with a 'C' to satisfy the clue but a 'D' would also work at a pinch. But I can't for the life of me spot the first letter though it's obvious what it must be.

The first letter comes from a misprint in the final word of the relevant clue. Your initial instinct about the final letter is correct.
