Thanks for the recommendation, I don’t always look at the FT.

Interesting grid… 18 lights (and in this case 16 clues) is a very low count.

By way of comparison, the lowest lights count in Guardian grids is 24.

There was an Guardian Araucaria puzzle which had THE OLD VICARAGE GRANCHESTER as an anagram. Is the FT one longer?

Was discussing this on 225 earlier. Here is a clue by Paul circa 2006 quoted as the longest …

Here ‘n’ there in the heavens’ watery mire are tiny slits, so the harsh weather is slight, not bulky, perhaps? (Spike Milligan) (5,3,5,2,3,3,5,3,4,4,2,3,6,4,2,5,5,3,4,2,4)

The answer is…

There are holes in the sky
where the rain gets in
but they’re ever so small
that’s why rain is thin

Apparently there is another by Enigmatist from the same era but I’ve yet to locate it though we believe the answer is…

Trailers for sale or rent
rooms to let fifty cents
no phone no pool no pets
aint got no cigarettes

This is the Araucaria clue, Chris…

Poetic scene with chaste Lord Archer vegetating (3,3,8,12)
