Yes, 3d looks like VERBAL. Lab Rev(erend) upset.

21d is DE (of French) in REAR (arse).

23d is BETTER (improved) losing TT (teetotal, non-drinker).

Glad we could help, Maggie. Hope you're all finished now?

It may help with the next puzzle if you look at the earlier posts in the thread - a few of yours had already been answered!

Bit obscure, this one. Beg is BUM, as in cadge a cigarette, us (US) band is R.E.M (Losing My Religion et al) reversed, (to back) giving BUMMER, pain in the arse.

Last one! 10ac. I have A-L-S but can’t fit anything in. I’m assuming the “lament” of the clue is Alas, but can’t finish the word. Would be grateful for an answer or heavy hint.

Hwnkeeper, it's always better to give the clue - not everyone has a copy. I think it's the clue that leads to a part of the UK - and if so, your first letter is wrong.

Hi Malone The clue is “The nation issues a lament for all to hear”, (5) and just writing it out has led me to the answer! And yes, my answer to 4/7dn was wrong..

Thanks, Henkeeper. I did the puzzle yesterday, but my copy isn't to hand - and I know other people welcome the chance to tackle clues from all the different mags and newspapers. Glad you quickly gt the answer.
