Hi Phil,
Chambers has both ‘each’ and ‘a’ as synonyms for the required word. E.g. the apples are two pounds a box.

Thanks Jono. You're right, of course. It was just such a struggle to get going this morning, something a bit more obvious would have been welcome. Then again, the way everything else slotted into place after 1D and 1A, perhaps Everyman was right to make them tricky.

I liked this. Stared at the NW corner for a minute or so, but when no lights came on I looked elsewhere for a foothold and then everything slotted in pretty quickly. Which I would say is the mark of a good crossword.

Morning all. This is odd - this seemed pretty easy to me and yet some of you say otherwise. Makes up for all the times when I'm feeling like the stupid one!
CODs we're 17, 25 and 24 (all across)

Like bowergirl and phil10000 I struggled to start. As someone who dislikes primarilies (might as well start with the letters entered), sometimes (aha) it helps you get going,, well it did for me today. Then they started to drop into place when you get a few crossers. So enjoyed it, especially 25a. Listened to *** Diamonds album recently - great sound, and love the Slow Horses theme. A couple of anagrams were well hidden and I wondered if 7d was going to see the reverend return, but no. 24a hidden was not so well hidden. Enjoy the rest if the day.

Hello all

Like many of you (far better solvers than me) I struggled with this. But I liked the two Cockney clues - unlike Brendan I don't live there, but I love the area.

Still not finished but plodding on.

ATB everyone.

Totally agree to the extent that It was only when I had the crossed words in That I grudgingly entered it.

If I sounded smug about how easy I found this, I’d like to make up for it by saying that I found today’s Quiptic an absolute stinker.

Like many, I found this much more difficult than the typical Everyman. I knew 25 to be a Cockney reference but it still took awhile. Apparently 26 is also? I wrote in the only thing that seemed to fit, and I think it’s right, but I’m still mystified. A few other iffy clues didn’t help either.

Darla, if it helps…
It’s said that in the days of the British Empire the Indian 25 rupee note had a picture of a pony on it, and the 500 rupee note that of a monkey. When the British soldiers returned from India they adopted these animals as slang terms for those amounts. There is some debate as to the truth of this.
