It did occur to me to wonder whether 1 dn was in fact BICKER not BACKER. Both 'supporter' and 'row' could be the identifier with the words in between the cryptic bit. Is the first word always the answer?

You were right to start wondering, Crossray. I would say the answer is BICKER where one (I) replaces A in backer, giving the definition 'row'

The answer (definition) is at either the beginning or the end of a clue, though it can vary in length.
Very occasionally the whole clue serves as both the definition and the wordplay
