Newcastle Utd qualified for the CL this season. In what campaign did they previously qualify for the tournament?

96/97 ... they finished 2nd with Keegan as manager

I think they finished 3rd but failed to qualify for the CL - they would play in the UEFA Cup

Geeker ... it`s complicated - there are qualifying rounds to get into the CL proper!
wish I`d not bothered now!

Wiki indicates they made it to the 2nd group stage of the CL proper in 2002-2003, playing Barca, Inter and Leverkusen.
I'm no football expert, but those opposing clubs rarely frequent the qualifying rounds.

When it says 'campaign' does it mean what Premier League season they qualified from or what CL season they qualified in?

Apologies Geeker - Newcastle did make it through to the last stage of the CL in 2002/2003
They finished 4th in the PL the previous campaign (2001/2002) to get into the qualifying rounds.
