This puzzle rarely manages to irritate me. I complete it to submit for the decent prize.

This week's bugbears:

Chief of Police rubbish, Spooner said TOP-CAT (a dodgy &lit ?)

American copper's round HEAT

Chap who did lines bobby finally nicked PEELE (a pretty obscure 16c poet - not in my Bradford's 10th edition)

...rarely fails to irritate me !

I had CENT for the American copper - which is round, but am not happy about it,

Tyke, one definition, in Chambers, of 'heat' is 'informal, the police. US.' And a heat is, of course, a round in a series of games, events etc.

Phantom, I didn't notice your post earlier. I still prefer my Heat to your Cent!

I also prefer HEAT

I looked up Heat only because it was in Bobbycollins' list, I hadn't given it much thought when I stuck my answer in earlier!
