I need help with 24a please. I see it has been integral to discussions here. Stiff about state protecting director. I don’t see what the missing letter is or indeed what to do with this clue. . My grid entry is ?AR

24a The missing item is also the name of a TV station.....

I thought at first there was a connection between the items, England football players perhaps but struggling to find towo of them!

Re. post 6, thanks gitto, I see it now, though that's about as tenuous a definition as I've ever come across

I've finished the puzzle, I thought it was pretty enjoyable all in all.

The one thing I can't find is the two-letter abbreviation for Portugal in 25d.

Googling it is no help, nothing on Wikipedia for those two letters, and I don't have Chambers on holiday. Does anyone know what it pertains to?

Thanks for the help with 14, the only clue I couldn’t solve, due to thinking it was the other sort and I had to add a T. Interesting tangents as always .. I found the character quite early and googled. As a real person, very interesting life history.
