from wiki, "Viticulture (from the Latin word for vine) or winegrowing (wine growing) is the cultivation and harvesting of grapes."

I'm surprised not to have seen more comments on this week's Jumbo as it struck me as rather grim, especially compared to the few previous weeks' offering which were much more solver-friendly.

I'm still stuck on several, especially in the top right.

If some kind person could supply me with :

9A Participant in combat sports has time for defensive work (7)
???????

I'd be grateful.

I'll have to defer any responses till a bit later today as I have to go out.

Looks like PARAPET. Para + PE + T. You need to separate combat and sport

Quisling,
Thanks for this which may spur my flagging brain cell.

I never would connect PE with sports though. My thinking was on much the same lines as Chrise's. I still find it difficult, re 17A, to think of moles as playing cricket!

Thanks again.

My pleasure, Bear of lb. I don't normally bother with Jumbos, but I did do this after you posted, and I agree it was trickier than I had been used to seeing

30a snap as in photograph.

33a a base is an alkali that neutralises an acid, so shows bluish in a litmus test.

7d Leguminous, eg(g) inside luminous
