I think that I have successfully completed the puzzle but am baffled by several wordplays.

For example: Donkey or train? D*P* I can only think DOPE but not a clue as to why it's correct.

And : Where winds become draughts? HORSE LATITUDES Not a clue about that one.

Not a big fan of Dean Mayer, but the prize on offer isn't to be sniffed at so I just grin and bear it.

Sorry for being a bit of a grumpy old bugger.

is the other just a very poor cryptic definition? the horse latitudes are where the winds aren't good for sailing.

The winds in the horse latitudes are light so draughts and on my mind I thought of draught horses.
