I have ploughed my way through this in around an hour and found it a pretty tedious slog. My only reason for bothering with the ST cryptic these days is for the chance of winning the decent prize on offer.

I won that pile of books a few years back from The Times Jumbo, bobbycollins. The only reason I bothered with the Sunday Times cryptic was that they were offering Cross pens as prizes. I got the ballpoint as a runner-up but the fountain pen eluded me. I'm still using the Parker I won from The Times cryptic in 1991.
