The two hidden words apply to my alma mater this very evening. I wonder whether Ifor will be there (not that I would know his identity!).

40a parses 4+2 in the wordplay but I had to back-solve from the answer.

Quite a lot of obscurities in this puzzle, 'stopping' being one of them (it's also a stringed instrument).

Yes, the answer's another obscurity (I think). 4 letters for where you might dwell, for 'goal'.

I’d never have guessed that. Thank you. Now to make sure I’ve got the missing letters……I hope that’s discoverable….

Ifor, that was magnificent. Thank you. A lot of very chewy clues and one or two gimmes to keep my spirits up. With an almost full grid I made the mistake of pondering the end game while I made the tea, without the preamble and grid to hand. So I went down two rabbit holes: one, an obscure gothic novel that gets a mention in Northanger Abbey; and, two, a novel in the “A Staircase in Surrey” sequence. But a look at the grid once dinner was done and clarity dawned. A corker!
