Many thanks to the setter for a very enjoyable puzzle - still beavering away.

Talking of setters, do the esteemed members of the forum have any advice for someone (nervously) setting their first Listener? Schoolboy errors to avoid, etc.

I was about to press send, but thought it prudent to check first.

So I have 17a and 26 that I can't parse the wordplay and two consecutive extra letters to allocate to them. If someone could tell me which of the two the earlier of the two letters goes with that might help me to get there

S-H, 26A has the first letter of the two alphabetically, followed closely by 17A.

Thanks schorley. Have 17 now - had the wrong regiment before, partly because I don't think that is a regiment as far as I can see - it's a corps containing a lot of regiments? But I could be wrong.

Still can't see 26, would appreciate a hint.

sh - 26 is one i havent fully parsed, but defn is first word, and is a certain type of opening, rather than a synonym for opening.

Shout if you need more (and if you get it and parse it fully, pls put me out of my misery)!

sh - sorry realise you have the answer to 26. I can see the pawn, and the bound part - but struggling on the quickly...unless that is actually part of the defn?

sh - i didnt have the pawn actually - worth checking the entry for pawn in brb. The defn is the first two words.

wow i wish you could delete/edit your own messages on here...i mean check brb for the first 3 letters of 26.
