I think I know the answer to this clue, but would like to work out how it's arrived at. Clue is: Like to keep no-good fellow close. Answer: ding-dong (like - dig, to keep no-good fellow - ng don), but how does that mean close? Appreciate advice!

Close as in a close contest eg the World Cup Final was a ding-dong affair

Mmm - isn't the essence of a ding-dong contest that the lead keeps changing? I suppose that would make it a close contest, though...
