4d Man's inheritance supports party, a brilliant gathering (6). The answer looks like galaxy; I can see how this fits with the second part of the clue, but would appreciate help in parsing the first part?

Bassett, gala is party, and the XY chromosomes define a biological male (XX define a female)

Party = Gala
XY = male chromosomes

And as it’s a down clue “supports” justifies the XY being underneath
