Looks like it might be 'thesaurus', if so I can't parse it.

Might be 'overburden', but I can't see how burden means cross.

9d Pub sign covering live outdoor meal (8)
Barbecue? Pub is bar, live is be, can't see the sign.

Chambers gives 'burden' as one of the definitions of 'cross', so it seems fair, reasonable.
