Whilst I can think of several words that fit the pattern - STRANDED, STRANGER, SHRUNKEN, SYRNGED etc - none of them seem to have much to do with the clue!

Any ideas?

Originally roped is R in SHUN KEN

Of course! It hadn't occurred to me that SHRUNKEN and WASTED could be synonyms but of course they can. Many thanks.
